Great way to Exercise in 20 minutes!!! March 12, 2010 Kelly A. Pugh (Omaha, NE USA) I really enjoy this video. Jillian MIchaels is tough, but I figure that I can handle it for 20 minutes. I love that she does strength, cardio and abs. It's perfect. I feel so much better after I have done this video.
awesome March 11, 2010 LL (San Francisco) I love this!! Who has time to workout these days? And if you only have 20 minutes, how much can you really accomplish? This video is the answer. I have been working out since I was 11 years old (I love to eat and love to keep a nice figure). This is the most expedient workout ever! I change her jumping jacks to other hoppy movements, I don't like the kind of stress it puts on my joints, nor does my chiropractor (car accident), and it still does the job. When I have time, I do her longer workout or longer yoga workouts. Amazing addition to my "regimen"
Deceptively tough but gratifying March 11, 2010 S. Gardner (San Jose, CA) This is a brilliant workout because it takes into consideration all levels of fitness.
I have been working out 4-6 days a week for around twenty years. I started out with the original "Firm" video, then included Step workouts, added running, Tae Bo, yoga, and then more pure strength workouts, like Cathe Fredrich's Muscle Max (another 5 stars). Just this year I added tennis. I get bored VERY easily and never do the same workout more than once a week. Basically, I cross-train. I don't LOVE working out, but I've managed, with all the variety, to maintain the discipline to keep at it, do what works for me, and enjoy a healthy and fit lifestyle.
All this to say, "Shred" has been with me for about 18 months and levels 2 and 3 still manage to push me to a very satisfying place where I feel like I really worked out. Again, I only do it once a week, but I do two levels each time, alternating: 1,2; 1,3; 2,3 on a three week rotation, and top the hour off with 20 minutes of Cathe Friedrich's Core.
This video is so deceptively tough. The moves are so simple in their design, but require major work to keep up with them. There is one move that I am STILL fighting to get to the finish without stopping. What that means is that this workout is substantial enough to give you lots to grow into, yet at the same time gives a beginner a realistic starting point to feel like they are doing the workout on their own level and giving them a sense of ACHIEVEMENT in doing it. It's a tough workout that is meant to be modified based on your current level. But it is YOUR workout, and YOU have to be the one to push yourself up to the max you can do.
I, personally, love Jillian. I actually think that the "smug" attitude some reviewers balk at is funny, because I take it as she is being a little self-ironic. I am so glad she is not one of those teachers who is perky and dance-y and resembles a cheerleader. (One reason I "left" The Firm 8 years ago - couldn't stand the Stepford feeling of the instructors.) I need instructors who sweat and grunt along with me. She's realistic: "See these abs.....you don't get these for free." She's empathetic: "We're working the obliques.....we women can get these too with a little work, okay, maybe a lot of work!" But most of all, while I'm huffing and puffing through high knees and grunting through rock stars, she's still talking! LIke it's nothing. She represents her own workout. And I respect that.
The only thing that doesn't work for me is that the abs in levels 1 and 2 are not challenging enough for me; but that is why I started applauding this video for being appropriate for all levels of fitness. For someone who is just starting to train their body, she doesn't try to impress by being too hard core and gives people a place to begin. It's brilliant.
The only thing that would be better than this video is if I had Jillian, herself, in my workout room screaming at me like she does her team on TBL!
great workout, but be careful if you are injury prone March 10, 2010 CAP (NJ) Great workout in a short amount of time! I am only about 15 pounds overweight and I wanted to lose a few pounds and tone up. However, after doing level one for a week, I developed bicep tendonitis in my left (weaker) arm from all the pushups. I looked ahead to level 2 and 3 hoping to find exercises I could use to replace the pushups, but I saw more pushups and exercises in that same position. I guess I will rest the arm for a few weeks and look for some exercises to subsitute for some of the pushups so that I can do the rest of the video. Also, be very careful with your knees on all of the lunges and squats.
Amazing results in no time! March 10, 2010 S. Allen (Pittsburgh, PA) I credit this DVD with changing my body from "good" shape to amazing shape. I have been exercising 4-5 days a week for about 8 years, and added this DVD to my routine in November of 2009. Total transformation. My arms, legs and abs are cut and defined now, more-so than they ever have been. Combined with some diet changes, I have lost 10 pounds since starting this DVD, and that was with a pretty good baseline of fitness. I do this DVD 2 times a week, doing other types of exercise the other 2-3 times a week (yoga, strength, cardio). I also have BFBM and NMTZ, but I do them much less often than Shred. After I started Shred, my other workouts starting feeling easier. I never would have thought that a 20 minute workout could be so effective. You can definitely start with a lower weight (2-3 lbs) and work your way up to higher weights. I still use 2 lbs for some of the moves because they are so challenging. Level 1 is a great place to start, but it will feel easy in no time! Levels 2 and 3 are, in my opinion, equally challenging, and I would venture to say that Level 2 is actually the most difficult. Level 2 incorporates quite a few moves in Plank Pose, which is killer!
I appreciate Jillian's no-excuses attitude. If you know anything about Jillian you should expect her to be hard on you. I find her sarcasm and tough attitude in the DVD to be motivating and fun!
I would not hesitate to purchase this DVD. You will not be disappointed. I wouldn't use it as my only form of exercise, but I would highly recommend having it around for those days when you need a quick, highly effective workout that you don't have to plan out yourself.
Get ready to sweat!
